Essential Oils in Aromatherapy

The practice of Aromatherapy is age-old and consists of using a variety of senses to provoke certain results that help alleviate common ailments in the mind and body. For many centuries, people have used scents to produce certain favorable results. To create the scents used for aromatherapy, herbs, flowers, fruits and other plants are used.

The scents that are derived from these various plants usually start off as an essential oil. These essential oils contain a high potency of the scent so that they can be further broken down to provide a smaller version of the scent that still maintains the same aromatherapy value that the scent is intended for. When dealing with essential oils, there are a few things that a person should first understand.

Perhaps the most important thing to know in regards to essential oils is that they are very heavily concentrated. Because of this, the storing of the essential oils is very important. First, they should be kept in an area that is cool and shielded from light. They should also be stored in a container that is dark in color and not clear. A dark amber or brown bottle is the ideal storage device. This will reduce light and prevent damage to the oil.

Essential oils work in aromatherapy because when these smells are released in the air, the olfactory sense in the body takes in the various chemicals released in these senses. From there, they are interpreted in the brain. Once your brain interprets these senses, your body will respond by performing certain actions. Certain smells will produce certain responses in the body that can help to heal ailments.

Essential oils are used to transport senses in the air. However, you can also apply these senses directly to the skin. Each of these methods will enable aromatherapy to work properly. An example of how you can apply aromatherapy to the skin occurs if you have certain physical pain such as soreness or pain. You simply apply the essential oil to the area that is painful and you should receive near immediate results. This same process can work for headaches, backaches, arthritis, and even carpal tunnel.

Aromatherapy is a highly functional, beneficial practice that should be used by everyone. There are a lot of ailments in the mind and body that can be mitigated through the practice of aromatherapy. If you are considering aromatherapy, do a little online research to determine which scents work best to heal your situation. Simply research your ailment with aromatherapy and essential oils and you should find your result.
